Each campus has its own unique environment to offer its students. This includes a multitude of programs to study, extra-curricular activities, studying abroad, choices in food, and an overwhelming amount of choices in housing on-campus or directly off-campus near the college center. Often, student housing as treated like just something else about college life, but with it comes benefits that make the experience of student housing an important one.
Exposure to diverse cultures
Very often, students choose a college or university for academic reasons and not social ones. So, the cultural make-up of a student-housing environment can be unlike any that they have experienced before. We may not feel comfortable at first, but once we get to know people with different cultural backgrounds and life experiences, it broadens our perspective of the world around us and what can be out there for us to explore. With exposure to cultural diversity, comes a more well-rounded individual who will be able to adapt to many different work and living environments beyond college life.
Learning how to live with other people
Up to this point in our lives, most of us have only experienced living with people that we share a common DNA with or even close friends. When you must adapt to living with someone that you have just met hours or even minutes before, it gives you an opportunity to understand yourself from the perspective of a more neutral party. This could mean learning how to be less selfish about how you share your space with another human being including adjusting your time to their schedule in a way that suits both of you. It also means being more aware of the material things that surround you and how they affect other people. Finally, it sheds a very harsh light on bad habits that family members may have ignored, but new roommates might tell you are not your best presentation of yourself.
Networking
With a variety of common areas to choose from such as student lounges, cafeterias, and visiting other dorm rooms or apartments, student housing gives you an opportunity to meet people within your program, not to mention forming study groups. They can recommend instructors and put you in touch with people that can help further your studies. Additionally, a fellow student that you develop a networking relationship with may be able to act as a referral for internships and even future permanent employment. You will not find this type of opportunity very readily anywhere like you can in a student-housing environment.
Safety and security
Any location designated as student housing usually means that there is an additional resource on hand for security. Most places like Greensboro Student Apartments take this into consideration and have bright, outdoor lighting, secured doors, and security on hand for any unforeseen emergencies or to regularly patrol the grounds and maintain a consistently secure environment. This includes regular maintenance checks of all lighted areas and entrances to ensure that security measures are always in place.
Close proximity to campus
Living on or very near a university or college campus in student housing gives you a much more convenient schedule where you only have to schedule the time it takes you to walk from your dorm or apartment to a building on campus that is in close proximity to where you live. There are no worries that waiting for a parking spot will make you late for class or even spending any extra money on parking fees or permits. It also makes it easier to take early-morning classes if the course is only a five-minute jog away. Think of how much more time you can organize around studying as opposed to traveling to get to school each week.
Creating life-long friendships
Not enough can be said about how opting in for student housing can create the opportunity to get to know someone so well that they become your friend for life. It may be awkward at first to move in with a stranger, but the possibilities of who you could meet and how you can connect with that person are endless. It would seem that this would be the most important thing you could experience when you decide to live in student housing.
