Depression at work is a common thing. And some people tend to suppress those feelings instead of facing and trying to solve them. If you find yourself depressed at work, there are so many ways to address the problem. The last thing you want to do is ignore what you are feeling, because you will be doing more harm than good. The following are some of the options to consider if you find yourself in such a position.
Get Support
Support is vital, especially when you are going through a tough time. When you realize that you are depressed, find support as soon as possible. Get someone from your workplace, preferably a friend, and share with them. You will need someone to lean on and walk with you, and it does not necessarily have to be someone from work. If you have a family member or another friend who does not work with you then make sure to share with them. Also, if you can find a support group you can join then do it. At least this way you are assured that you are not alone and this could happen to just about anyone.
Seek Treatment
Just as you would do with any other kind of treatment, you need to seek treatment once you know you have depression. While it is a mental condition, it needs medical attention to get through it. You will likely be prescribed antidepressants if your condition is extreme, and you will definitely need depression counselling. So, consult a doctor, or visit the closet wellbeing clinic in your area to get help.
Develop a Self-care Routine
Make a few changes, for instance, kick out those bad eating habits you have and start eating healthily. Even when you are craving junk food and other unhealthy foods, supplement them with other satisfying healthier foods. This way, you don’t have to worry about your blood sugars shooting high. Also, get as much sleep as you can at night. Try to catch at least 7 hours, and if you can sleep 9, the better. In addition, exercise at least four times a week. Exercise releases endorphins, which are the feel good hormones into your brain. Lastly, learn how to manage stress. If you feel pressure from hard deadlines at work, go for a short walk and try to relax, or do any other thing that helps you relax.
Don’t Be Hard on Yourself
The worst thing you can do to yourself while facing depression is be hard on yourself. Oftentimes, most people feel that opening up about their situation is going to be received harshly by other people. The reality is, most of the people, if not all, you are going to sympathise with you once you open up. So, don’t fear talking about it to people close to you. Also, if your boss is understanding, try to share with him/her and maybe they will help you. Don’t sit on your problem and assume that people won’t understand you, because the help you need is around you.
