As managers, business owners, and employers, we have a responsibility to our employees. It’s up to us to keep them safe and look after them, but also to keep them happy and help them to do their jobs well. We expect them to pull their weight, to work hard, and often, to go the extra mile and put in more effort. We expect them to provide excellent service, to use their initiative, and to keep our companies moving forward, and we usually ask them to do it with a smile on their faces. But, to do that, there are things, like training, safety supplies, encouragement, and gratitude that they need from us. Here are some things that you should ask yourself if you are wondering whether or not you are giving your team members everything that they need.
Are They Happy?
Often the first sign that you aren’t is an unhappy, demotivated team. Signs that they are unhappy at work include increased sickness, poor punctuality, extended lunch breaks, bad mood, and a lack of communication. You might also notice the quality of work slipping.
If your team isn’t happy, you need to do something about it. Even one unhappy team member can bring others down, decreasing morale and productivity. So, ask them what they need. Do they know what they are doing? Is there anything they need help with? Would case management legal software help make things easier? Do they require more flexibility? Speaking to them is often the best way to find out what they need from you.
Do You Have a Training Structure?
Training is one of the most crucial things that you can do for your team. With proper training, they can do their jobs effectively and safely. This allows them to enjoy their work, learn more, and develop their skills. But, far too many businesses stop training after the initial period.
Do you have long term training structures in place? Are your staff well-trained before they work alone? Do you regularly refresh training moving forward?
Are They Safe?

Safety is another primary consideration for any manager or business owner. Are you giving your team everything that they need to do their jobs safely? As well as training, they should have the safety equipment and uniforms that they need, and you should carry out thorough risk assessments.
Is Your Business Meeting Targets?
Another sign that you might not be giving your team what they need is your business failing to grow or hit targets. Instead of disciplining staff for not hitting goals, ask them why they are unable to do so, what is holding them back, and what you can do to help.
Do You Have an Effective Way to Monitor Inventory?
Your staff might need specific tools and equipment, as well as safety supplies to do their jobs effectively. Do you know when they need more? Putting efficient inventory monitoring systems in place can help ensure that they never run out of what they need.
How is the Break Room Looking?
Your staff don’t just need supplies for work. You should also be offering them somewhere to relax and take a break. Your break room should be well-stocked with snacks and drinks to help keep your staff happy. A fridge, kettle, and comfortable seating are other useful additions.
