A Visual Summary of the First Presidential Debate of 2020: Yes, It Was This Bad

In case you missed the debate, I’ve assembled a brief—but for more palatable—summary of what you would have experienced. In sixteen short quotes—eight from each of the two candidates—I’ve tried to capture the mood and substance of the entire debate.

No, the statements on the graphic weren’t said sequentially, but they might as well have been. They’re all real, verbatim quotes. And the conversation was just as chaotic and strange and lacking in anything of substance as the graphic implies.

If you want to watch the full 90-minute debate, you can see it here. But be warned: you probably won’t get much more out of it than you will from this graphic. Regardless of how you lean politically, this was a sad display of leadership in America.

For clarity, I added the times when each quote was said to the left or right of each quote. You can read the full transcript here.
