A lack of research can poke quite a few holes in your business model; whether you’re someone who doesn’t quite know what kind of business you want to run, or you’re someone who has a clear idea in their head over the company they want to lead, this is a critical mistake.
How can you be sure that your business has done enough research? Well, you need to ask yourself a few questions, and make sure you’ve gone back to the drawing board enough times to be satisfied. And with the points below, this post is here to help.
Your Plan is Shaky
When you read through your business plan, how well does it sound to your own ears? Maybe it’s got a few gaps, or feels weak in some places, and in all, it just sounds plain shaky. And when a business plan is shaky, the subsequent business you set up will be too.
This is the first sign you haven’t done enough research. So, go through it all again, and pick out where you need to expand – what do these sections tell you? And most of all, do you have the data points to back your evidence up?
You Don’t Have Enough Data
Every single company out there needs data to work off of. A good thing to do here is to create your own ‘knowledge database’, to make sure you never need to work off of someone else’s notes. Even just collecting customer contact details counts here, but you could always take this further as well.
All in all, as a small but growing company, having a collection of data to pull from will be indispensable to your success. In a similar manner to batch skip tracing, you need to be able to track down large amounts of data at a time, related to your market, your customers, and everything in between. However, how are you going to locate the right sources, and in the right amounts? Well…
If You’re Not Sure Where to Find Your Sources
We all know that when it comes to doing research, you need to have plenty of reliable sources. However, for a lot of new business leaders out there, it can be incredibly difficult to locate these sources, and be able to use them for your own ends. Some subscription prices for the most useful databases are just too expensive for your home grown business, after all.
But don’t give up hope, as even just talking to your customers counts as having a researchable source. Further on from this, talking to your own employees, as well as any suppliers or intermediaries you use, can also count! Read through online publications, use open source research tools, and talk to the people who are already around you. Collect and cross examine their feedback, and use it to make your business better.
Your business might need to conduct some more research, but this doesn’t have to be hard to do!
