How to Manage Back Pain While Traveling for Work

If you suffer from chronic back pain, it can be a challenge to get through a typical day. However, if you’ve got a vacation or business trip planned, you may be nervous that your back pain will keep you from being productive or making great memories with family and friends when you’re out of town. It’s essential to learn how to manage your pain at home, but it’s even more important to reduce your pain as much as possible when traveling. Try to Stay Active

Back pain tends to worsen when you’re sitting or standing still for long periods of time. Unfortunately, you’ll likely be in one of the positions for hours while you’re traveling to your destination. However, you should move your body as much as possible. Try using the 30-minute rule to keep back pain at bay. Shift your position every half hour, even if you can only do so for a few minutes. If you’re standing up, sit down, and vice versa. If you’re on a plane, walk up and down the aisle a couple of times. Or, stand in an area on the plane if the flight attendants will allow you to do so. The more active you are, the more your flexibility will improve. This will help prevent pain during your trip and keep you feeling your best once you arrive.

Lower Your Stress Levels

Traveling can be exciting but it can also be extremely stressful. Stress can lead to physical pain so it’s important to stay as calm as possible. Riding in the car with impatient children or trying to get your luggage in the overhead compartment on a plane can lead to stress and more intense back pain. Don’t worsen your stress by trying to do everything yourself. Ask family and friends for help and plan ahead as much as you cans all the items you need are accessible during travel. This will make a huge difference in how enjoyable your trip is even while you’re traveling.

Minimize Pain-Inducing Activities

You know your pain triggers and the condition of your back muscles and nerves more than anywhere, so make sure you avoid the activities that will increase your chances of pain while you’re on the road. Avoid trying new activities that could worsen your back pain. If you want to engage in strenuous exercise or sports during your vacation, look for solutions to keep the pressure off your back muscles. Try to get as much rest as you can on the plane or in the car and use a neck pillow to support your upper body and maintain the proper position of your spine.

It is also a good idea to meet with your doctor a few weeks before your vacation. Talk to your physician about any pain you are currently experiencing and let your doctor know that you’re planning to travel soon. If you’re already taking pain medication, check to see if you need to increase the dose or take steroid shots for powerful short-term pain relief.

Planning for your trip with your back muscles in mind can help eliminate or significantly reduce pain during your travels. You can even try positioning yourself on the sofa with your neck pillow or practicing stretches that will relieve pressure and muscle strain on every part of your body.
