You apply for roles all the time, but you barely even reach the interview stage. What’s holding you back? Each individual case can be different, but it’s fair to say there are a few common things that hold most people back. Below, you’ll find three reasons your job applications often fall short:

A poorly designed resume

Yes, the way your resume looks will have a direct impact on your job success. If it’s terribly formatted with no breaks or headings, no recruiter is going to give it a second glance. Similarly, some employers will use software that scans resumes and looks for keywords or information. Why is this important? Because the way you format your resume can interrupt these scanners and stop them from working. For instance, using lines to break up sections might stop the software from scanning below that line. 

Anyway, you need to work on your resume design to stand a better chance of landing your dream job. An excellent resume gets you noticed right away before any of the content has been written. Likewise, one that looks terrible will be discarded without the recruiter bothering to read it. 

A lack of new skills

Regardless of what job you’re trying to get, you will need relevant skills to secure the position. What holds a lot of people back is their lack of new skills for the modern workplace. You may have some skills that can help you, but you don’t have ones that are relevant for modern work.
