You’re not going to be winning any boss of the year awards doing this, but it will help show you who is serious about your business and who is just cruising on by without doing much at all. But when conducting a performance review, it’s important to address the root causes of some workers struggling and identify how best you can help. The right solutions to address poor employee performance will depend on the causes of that poor performance. Another thing that you are going to need to do is work on getting your employees to work together. A lot of companies have issues with this, and you need to identify the problem sooner rather than later. If it’s just one person that is causing a problem for the entire time, then that person needs to either learn to get on with everyone else, or they need to find a new job. You can’t have one person pulling the whole thing down, as this is not fair to you or those around you.
If the whole team is just disconnected and not working, then you have got to do something to fix this. For example, you can set up an entire weekend retreat for the team so that you are all forced to bond and learn to work together. Business Goals
If you want your employees to work well, then they need to know what they are supposed to be doing at all times. Everyone works better when they have something to work towards, which is why you need to clearly set out the business goals for every employee you have. Business goals should be about what your business is hoping to achieve, which gives them a clear direction to head in.
Of course, you want to make your business goals as manageable as possible. If you have a hard end goal, then you need to detail this, as well as the mini goals that you have set as stepping stones to get there. The last thing that you want to do is set unrealistic goals, and have everyone disheartened when they can’t be reached. Trust us when we say that this will happen because as humans, we always want to succeed. Without success, we have no motivator, which will end up being a huge problem for your business.
Fresh Faces
Have you thought about adding new team members if your employees need a little bit of a shake up? Sometimes, a new member of the team can really bring everyone together and ensure that the workflow is moving along nicely. Not only does it mean that there are some new ideas going around in your teams, but it can also sometimes give your existing employees a little reminder that there are other people out there and if they are not willing to do the job, someone else is.
When you are hiring new people, you need to keep in mind what your business is about and what kind of team they are going to be going into. Like we said, a fresh face can bring a team together, but it can also fracture it. You need to be extremely careful and think hard about whether or not the person that you are interviewing would thrive in the team, or not.
Random Drop Ins
If you have got the time, you should start randomly dropping in on your employees to see how they are getting on. See how they are performing when they think that nobody is watching, see what kind of things they get up to at any given point and so on. This will help you to get a good idea of the energy level of your team as a whole, and it should give you a lot of the information that you are looking for. The first time might be a little bit of a shock to a lot of the team, but if you keep randomly dropping in, never at the same time or on the same day, they are going to start giving it their best all the time.
When people don’t know when they are going to be checked on, they have an instinct inside of them to do their best all the time to avoid being a failure. So, it might take a few impromptu visits to get this started, but trust us when we say that they will start working to the best of their ability all the time if they’re never sure when they are going to see you.
Lead from the Front
All good leaders lead from the front. This means that they are not standing behind their team issuing orders and shouting at everyone while doing nothing themselves. It means that you are at the front of the team, leading them rather than letting them do everything on their own. You need to help with work when it comes up, you need to answer any questions or queries surrounding the business as a whole, and generally be the person that they go to when there is a problem.
There are too many leaders these days that don’t want to do anything and just want to rely on their employees. The problem here is that your employees are then likely going to be overworked and not want to work hard for you anymore when you treat them like slaves. So, instead of letting this happen, show them how hard you are working too by taking the reins and getting right to the front. The front is a scary place to be, but it’s where you belong when you own a business.
Three Strikes
The final thing that we are going to suggest is that you go for a three strikes and you’re out rule. We know that it feels very much like a school thing to do, because it is, but that doesn’t mean that it can’t work well in a workplace setting. There are obviously times where a strike is not going to be needed even if something has gone wrong. Accidents happen, people mess up and people make mistakes but unless it was on purpose, or because they were being extremely careless there’s no need to be too harsh.
Don’t let the power go to your head here. Only ever give strikes where they are necessary otherwise you’re going to end up losing employees because of the way that you are treating them. You should come up with a list of things that are offenses worthy of a strike, and ensure that your employees know them. It’s completely fair to give people two extra chances before firing them, especially if they are not contributing to your business effectively in any way anymore.
