5 Ways You Can Invest In Self-Development

In order to grow and excel in your life – both personally and professionally – you need to continuously invest in your personal development. Similar to how one invests in the financial market hoping to make a profit in the near future, investment in one’s self-development also raises one’s internal value as an individual. Self-development can mean different things for different people – for instance, for an entrepreneur, self-development would constitute attending a workshop that helps them manage their time more efficiently; for a student, self-development would constitute learning a new skill on Coursera; and for the CEO of an organization, self-development could constitute taking a sabbatical. In order to understand where your self-development lies, you need to first conduct a personal assessment and figure out which areas of your life need improvement. Listed below are five ways you can invest in your self-development:

1. Read a new book every month

Books can often change your life – certain stories leave such an impact on our souls that we end up being a different human being after completely a good book. In addition to fiction, autobiographies, journals, and books on a subject topic help us enhance our worldly knowledge. They allow us to witness reality from different perspectives and add to our knowledge pool. In addition to that, books open our minds to new ideas and concepts. They allow us to witness multiple realities simultaneously, and irrespective of the subject you are interested in, there is likely to be a book on it. If you have trouble keeping up with your one book per month goal, you should join a monthly book club.

2. Take up online courses

The global economy is growing ever so rapidly and so are new avenues of business, trade, and arts. Hence, it is important that we continuously invest in ourselves and take up online courses for various subjects that are relevant to our career fields and match with our interests. While earlier, individuals were limited in terms of what knowledge they could pursue because online education didn’t exist in any capacity – however, since the advent of online academies such as Coursers and Udemy, learning hasn’t been easier, and you can find an online course for anything and everything. In addition to the convenience associated with online courses, there exist online communities such as Quora where one can go for guidance and support, and converse with people from similar backgrounds and goals.

3. Consider being your own boss

Freedom is wealth, and the freedom of being your own boss and working at your own pace is unmatchable. While most individuals shy away from entrepreneurial ventures due to a lack of time and money, it is to be noted that if you are truly passionate about something, you are bound to make time for it. As for finances, you can always consider taking out a small loan from a personal loan company for investing in your business. By running your own small venture, you’d be able to work at your own pace and find time for yourself throughout the process.

4. Travel as much as you can

Out of all the money you ever spend on yourself, the amount that you are least likely to regret is the money you spend on travel. Traveling to foreign places, meeting new people, and experiencing new cultures is what will enrichen your personality, and put you on a whole other level of self-realization. Take some notes out of Eat, Pray, Love – the 2006 bestselling novel by Elizabeth Gilbert – and plan your next vacation. If you feel you lack the finances needed to travel to a foreign location, keep in mind that traveling need not be luxurious and expensive. You can always find means to cut corners in your lodging and living, while you spend on what actually matters.

5. Reflect on your past and present

Learning from your past experiences is important, and can be done only by reflection on yourself. Whenever you fail at or achieve something, it is important that you take a step back, take it all in, and understand what experiences in your life brought you to this point and how can you improve or better your actions in the future. While learning from others through books, podcasts, and courses is important, it is also crucial that we peek into our own selves and take a note every once in a while. The key here is to keep learning from all sources and to continuously apply that learning to ourselves.

To lead a healthy, successful, and happy life, individuals should make a constant and conscious effort to better themselves in all aspects of life. Self-development should hence be a priority in all of our lives and shouldn’t be taken for granted under any circumstance. You can only succeed in life if you learn new things and gain new experiences as you go along, and self-development allows you to do just that.
