11 Ways to Effectively Use Your Downtime

Most of us are busier than ever. Between work, family, and running errands, it can feel as if we’re constantly on the move.

Yet life is for living, and as such, it’s important to make the most of the free hours that we find ourselves with. All too often, we can find ourselves simply scrolling through Instagram or mindlessly watching television, and while it’s nice to do those things on occasion, it’s best that it doesn’t become too much of a habit.

In this post, we’ll run through a bunch of effective ways to use your free time at home. The next time you find yourself with an hour or two to spare, try one (or more!) of the following.

Find a Good Book

In a world full of internet-connected devices, it’s easy to overlook the power of a good book. Reading offers a wide range of benefits, from helping to broaden your worldview to reducing stress, it’s a simple, life-enhancing activity that can make a big difference.

If you haven’t read in a while, look at finding a book that you’ll enjoy. It doesn’t matter if it’s “literary” — the only thing that matters is that you enjoy reading it. Remember, the more you read, the more you’ll benefit, so try to aim to read for at least 15 – 30 minutes a day.

Play a Brain-Boosting Game

Looking for a fun, productive way to spend your time at home? Then look at playing a brain-boosting game. We mention ‘brain-boosting’ because while there are plenty of fun mobile games out there, not all of them are good for you. Games that require brain power, on the other hand, will improve your memory, concentration, and critical thinking skills — and the best part? You’ll get those benefits while having fun. Games such as Wordle, chess, crosswords, and Scrabble, all of which are available to play online, will give your brain a nice workout. Don’t worry if you find these games challenging when you first start; you’ll quickly get the hang of them, and it won’t be long before you’ve become a master.

Try Yoga

It can be tempting to spend the evening on the couch, especially if you’ve been at work all day. But it’s important to keep in mind that sitting down too much isn’t good for you, and it’s certainly not good for your body.

If your body is beginning to feel a little tight from all that sitting you’ve been doing, then look at following along with a YouTube yoga practice. In as little as thirty minutes, you’ll find that your body — and your mind — feels much better. In fact, you’ll likely feel so good that you decide to make yoga a regular part of your life!

Invest In House Organization

Our surroundings have a subtle but noticeable impact on how we feel. It’s simply much easier to feel happy and relaxed when we know that our properties are well-organized, clean, and clutter-free.

If your home is beginning to look a little bit worse for wear, then use your free time to get it into shape. Deeply cleaning and tidying your property might not sound like the most fun way to spend your free time, but you’ll be happy once you’ve done so — studies have repeatedly shown that having a clean and clear home can reduce stress and boost happiness levels.

Make a New Dish

Cooking isn’t everyone’s favorite activity, and even those who do like getting into the kitchen often just make the same old dishes over and over again. If you have some time at home, then why not look at pushing yourself to make a new, delicious dish?

Creating a restaurant-worthy dish at home takes time, but it’s very much achievable for anyone with the discipline to follow instructions. Play your favorite cooking music, open up a bottle of wine, and embrace the experience of cooking up a delicious meal. Once it’s all done and dusted, you’ll likely be surprised to learn that you’re actually much better in the kitchen than you thought you were!

Write a Journal Entry

As we said above, many of us are busier than ever, and that doesn’t leave a lot of time for reflection. Yet reflection is important — it can, after all, be a pathway towards growth. If you have some time at home, then consider writing a journal entry. They’re a great way to share your thoughts and feelings (with yourself), and that can be highly useful for making sense of all aspects of your life, be it your personal relationships, your issues, and what you want to achieve in the future.

Don’t have a journal (or even a pen) in the house? Don’t worry — there are plenty of journaling apps to choose from.

Research a Trip

We’re all guilty of falling into a routine from time to time, and one of the best ways to get out of that rut is to go on a trip. While it’s unlikely that you can whisk yourself away to a fascinating part of the world at just a moment’s notice, you can use your downtime to research and make plans for trips that you will take when you have the opportunity to do so. Even looking up potential adventures can provide a bit of a boost, since it reminds you that adventure is out there.

Make your travel plan, and it doesn’t matter if you can’t actually make it happen immediately. When you do have the time, you’ll know that you have a solid plan that you just need to put into action.

Make a Phone Call

Life’s business means that we can sometimes go a long time without speaking to our friends and family members, especially if they live in another part of the country. In some instances, months can pass before we realize that we haven’t been in touch with a loved one! If you have some free time, then look at making a few phone calls. People love getting phone calls out of the blue from the important people in their lives. By the time you finally hang up, you’ll likely both have a big smile on your faces.

Do Something Creative

A lot of good can come from engaging in creative activities. It can be relaxing, it boosts your mood, and hey, it might just result in something brilliant. But don’t worry so much about the outcome of engaging in a creative activity — simply doing it will be good enough! Some fun creative activities to try include:

Don’t think you’re creative? Well, you’re wrong — if you’re a human, then you have the capacity for creativity. Give it a try and see what you come up with!

Let Yourself Rest

We live in a society that encourages productivity, but it’s vital to remember that rest is important, too. Having plenty of rest boosts your mood, replenishes your energy, and simply gives you the time and space for your mind to wander. If your life has been all go, go, go recently, then don’t feel guilty about simply spending a few hours on the couch.

Set Yourself a No-Screen Challenge

Finally, consider setting yourself a no-screen challenge. Many of us are guilty of picking up our phones as soon as we feel even a twinge of boredom. By overriding that temptation, you’ll give space for your mind to come up with new ways to spend your time. Who knows what you might come up with when you don’t have the internet at your fingertips?
