Education is much more widely available than it has ever been before. We can stay in school after graduation to complete a master’s degree, a vocational course and eventually even a PhD. We can return to school after a lengthy break. We can study part-time and online. We can even take the time away from work to take courses that will help our careers. Some employers even offer to fund further education, as they know that a well trained and educated workforce is good for their business. Education is by no means just for kids.
Which is good, because if there is one thing that many adults regret, it’s not making the most of their school years when they had the chance. When we’re young, education is all around us, and more importantly, it’s free. Yet so few of us appreciate it. We hate going to school, we make excuses to stay at home, and we don’t give our lessons our full focus when we are there. We waste it because we don’t appreciate its value or importance, and most of us have no idea what we want to do after school anyway. If you are interested in going back to school later in life, here’s five reasons that you should go for it.
You Know What You Want
So many of us just sign up for the courses that our friends are doing when we’re at school. Staying with our mates is often more important to us than deciding what we really want. If you go back to school later in life, it’s usually because you know what you want. You know where you want to be in the coming years, and what you need to do to get there. You’ll be more committed, more focused and you’ll give it your all.
You’ve Got Experience
People worry about returning to school after a break because they’ve forgotten how it works. But, sometimes experience, both of life and work, is more helpful than recent education. You’ll know how to learn, how to take in information, and you’ll make friends easily.
You’re More Organized
As an adult, whatever you’ve done in your life, you’ll have picked up some fabulous organizational skills. You’ll be great at organizing your work, managing your time and fitting everything in. Much better than you were the last time you studied. This organization will be essential to your success.
To Earn More
One of the main reasons that people return to education after a break is to advance their career, to move into a new field or to increase their earning potential. Gaining further qualifications and knowledge means that you’ll be able to apply for different jobs, earn promotions, ask for pay rises and enter a new sector at a higher level. An online education masters for example could see you get a high paid job straight away.
To Set an Example
If you’ve got kids, going back to school sets a fantastic example. You’ll show your children how important school is, how hard work pays off, and how you can always do something to better yourself, for yourself. This makes you a great role model.
