Knowing what to put in your resume can be difficult. You want to grab the recruiter’s attention, make yourself stand out, and show them all of your best qualities as quickly as possible. You don’t want to be the person who gets thrown straight onto the ‘no’ pile because their resume bored the reader to tears, and the thought of being in an office with somebody who could write such drivel isn’t a positive one. You can only make the right first impression once, and here’s how to do it.
Don’t be afraid to break convention
Sure, there are some things that really don’t need to be on a resume. You don’t need to add a photo of you with your cat at the beginning, and you don’t want to showcase your WordArt skills either. However, if you want to break convention a little and shake your resume up in a positive way, then don’t be afraid to do it. Going against the tide of boredom can be a good thing!
Cut out the rubbish
The issue with most resumes is that they are full of useless information that recruiters don’t want to know. Sure, you may want to talk about your childhood hobbies, but unless they’re going to be worth the attention of the reader then cut it out. It’s better to miss out some things and just have the key information than to overload people with information that they don’t want to read.
Put the important stuff at the top
A resume should always start off with the most important information, and the things that you want to be read first. People look at a resume for an average of six seconds. It’s highly likely that they’re going to spend these six seconds looking at the very first things that you have to say, so you may as well make every effort to come across as an interesting and promising candidate straight away.
Always better yourself
If your resume looks stale of late and you haven’t really been doing anything new, then change this however you can. Perhaps you can volunteer, or you could embark on an FNP program online? Whatever it is that you do, make it clear to people that you’re always looking to change and grow. An individual who has no interest in personal development is rarely an asset to a company.
Tailor your resume
Every time you apply for a job, you should be adapting your resume to suit the job itself, and the specifications mentioned by the business in the job advert. Though this is time consuming, it is most definitely worthwhile, as it marks you out immediately as a suitable candidate. The key here is submitting strong applications, not just throwing the same resume at anybody who is hiring!
So, if you want to give your resume a boost then keep these things in mind. You’ll soon find your way to the ‘yes’ pile instead of lingering around with the nos and the maybes!
