Hands down, the best way to get the most out of your higher education is to know what you want to do with your life. Thankfully, all you really need to know right now as a high-school student is what industry you are most passionate about. What have you loved to do since you were a kid? Chances are you already know what you are passionate about. The next step is just figuring out what type of careers are available in that passion and how you can best get your foot in that door:

1.   Research Your Passion

There are likely a lot of job positions out there that you have never heard of. This is why it is a good idea to do a job search in the industry you are passionate about. See what job roles exist in that industry, and continue your search from there. Read up on some of the top companies, what they do, and what roles people who work there are filling.

LinkedIn can be very useful for this step. All you need is to search for the people who are connected to a company you have found. Look through their online resume, and you can get a sense of their backgrounds and what you need to do to follow in their footsteps.

2.   Search for Degrees (and Colleges)

You want a great degree at a great college. A great degree will give you everything you need to know and the connections in your chosen industry that will help you get that first foot in the door. A great college will support you, your mental health, and your career ambitions. You need them both to be great.

Search for degree courses first if you want a more specialized career. If not, then look at top colleges and then compare the degrees after the fact. When you have a shortlist, you will want to compare colleges on the CampusReel website based on the quality of life and opportunities.

3.   Attend the Open Tour

Go to the open tour, and if you can, try to stay a day or two in the area. You need to know if you like the college environment and the city or town it is situated in. You will be living here for four years of your life, and if you get stressed out or anxious in big crowds, a city campus is probably not going to help you reach your fullest potential.

4.   Make Note of Career Help

Some colleges will go above and beyond for their students. They will secure internships and job training that are only available to their students. They will provide career advice, mental health services, access to competitions, and even offer resources to their alumni.

5.   Ask Questions

There are usually some programs that will connect prospective students with alumni so that they can ask questions and get real answers from graduates. If there is such a program, take advantage of it. Alumni can help you determine if the degree or college is right for the career path you want to venture down, and if it is, they can give you invaluable insight. Learn what they did to get accepted, and take their advice on how to make the most out of your degree to heart.
