The Various Life Skills You Can Gain By Regularly Completing Puzzles

Sustaining Focus

Puzzles can take some time to complete, even when you’re an expert at solving that one particular puzzle type. Even being anything but amateur at filling out killer sudoku grids means you’ll still likely take around 5 to 10 minutes to get through one such puzzle.

If you’re racing against the clock, you may be able to get that number down to 3 minutes or so, but that isn’t always that fun to try.

As such, you’ll need to sustain your focus in order to complete a lengthy puzzle. You need to navigate feelings of boredom and dissatisfaction, as you know completing this one puzzle will be very enjoyable when you actually crack it!

Being able to remind yourself of that in the moment is key to building the life skill of perseverance. Trust us – not giving up, even if it would be easy to do so and you could always try another puzzle on another page, is quite the accomplishment. Even when you like to do the thing that’s frustrating you in the moment, it’s always going to be easier to move on to something else.

But every time you allow yourself to push on and persevere, you reinforce the habit of sticking at something. That can help in both your personal life and your professional one; you’re clearly someone who has determination, and you’re willing to put in some hard graft to get your desired result.

Communication

Completing a puzzle on your own, in your own time, and at your own pace, can help with your communication skills. Really it can – you can build a much larger vocabulary when you’re a regular amongst the word search and crossword pages. If you ever have to look anything up in the dictionary, it’s much more likely to stick out in your head as well.

This can make you a far more effective communicator, as well as a lot more creative in the way you communicate. If you like the art of the written word, and you enjoy creating long form blog content or writing flash fiction, supplementing your creative knowledge with a few puzzles here and there can really help.

Much like reading, puzzles can help you develop a stronger, more original communication style. They can help you change and adapt your current tone, which can make it easier for others to understand you, but it can also help you to understand yourself.

After all, if it’s easier than ever to put your thoughts and feelings down into words, you’ll be able to succinctly put your own point of view across whenever the situation calls for it. That can make trying to explain your side of things far less frustrating in the long run!

Problem Solving

Puzzles can help you to build some tougher problem solving skills. If you’re someone on a career path that involves a lot of thinking outside the box, applying strategic thinking, and trying to find new ways to go about old frustrations, this will be very beneficial for you.

From a simple yet fun word search to a lateral logic puzzle that only gives you set bits of information to work off of, the more puzzles you complete, the better your problem solving will be.

A word search is the kind of puzzle that helps you look for patterns and act quickly, whereas the latter kind of puzzle will help you to make decisions based on even the scantest of clues. Both are important to the problem solving process, so try them both out if you’re interested in shaping this life skill.

Time Management

Anyone who’s ever done a jigsaw puzzle knows they can take an age to get through. It’s why such puzzles will help you refine your time management skills. If you know you can complete a 1000 piece jigsaw in the span of 4 to 6 hours, you can split those hours across the next week in an even way.

That means you’re not taking a quarter of the day trying to do this one puzzle. You’re letting yourself go at a productive pace, but you’re not sacrificing the other responsibilities you have to indulge in it. Instead, you can set an hour long timer every afternoon between Monday and Saturday and whittle away at the jigsaw as the days go on.

That’s time management in its most simple form, and practicing this can help you to allocate your time toward everything you care about in life. No one thing needs to take precedence above another; instead, everything has its place.

Unwinding and Relaxing

At the end of the day, this is all puzzles are really for. If you want to be able to unwind and relax after a hard day of work, having a puzzle book on the coffee table will scratch that itch for you.

Pick it up when you get in, make sure you’ve got an actual coffee to drink at the same time, and have a glorious half hour or so to yourself before you have to make a meal, help with the kids’ homework, or run some errands.

And yes, this is a life skill you need to have on your side. Being able to unwind from the frustrations of the day at your own pace will prevent those frustrations from getting on top of you. You’re far less likely to ever let them out on anyone else, and you’re not going to carry them around with you either.

Being able to deal with emotions in the moment, even when it may be a little inconvenient for you to cope with them, is key to living healthily and happily. You always need to be able to take time for yourself, and a small, quick puzzle can help your brain vent out the mess it’s been carrying around all day.

Puzzling for Better Life Skills

Puzzling really can brush up your life skills and make them all the better. Not only can you gain new ones, but you can refine the ones you already hold dear and make good use of. And best of all, you can have a lot of fun developing your skills in this manner.

Completing puzzles can make a big difference to your vocabulary, how you handle your time, and that sense of perseverance that’s incredibly important to keep strong and supple. Having a puzzling hobby can also teach you how to unwind and relax at the end of a long day, and sometimes, that’s the most important skill of all.
