As the boss, you’ve got a lot of responsibility to shoulder, especially when it comes to hiring on new employees. You’ve got show them the ropes, make sure they’re comfortable, make sure they’ve got the tools in place to work well, and then review them after a certain period. All in all, that’s quite a long process to keep up with! But it’s definitely an important one.

And so, if you’re currently in the hiring period for your business, what is it you should do for a new employee? If you’ve found the perfect person for your empty role, and you want them to reach their full potential whilst they work for you, how do you encourage and inspire them? Well, if you’re not too sure (because this is your first time in this situation, don’t sweat it!), here are some ideas for you to look into.

Give Them a Positive Environment

A positive working environment is something we all need, in order to do our best work. If we feel looked down upon, or completely isolated and unsupported, we’re going to find it a struggle to keep on going. We can’t stay motivated, and we receive no feedback or proper interaction through what we do, and ultimately, we’re left in quite a toxic working environment.

So make sure your working space has a specifically crafted atmosphere to it, and never let a new employee walk into their first day on the job unsupervised. Keep your eyes and ears out for anyone taking their job a little too seriously, and coming off quite intimidating, and make sure to have a word at the end of the day to make sure everything went smoothly. This is one of the best ways to show your new employee that you care about their wellbeing, and their time on the job, and that you’re just the right person to come to work for.

Scale Their Benefits

The right kind of employee benefits will always guarantee that your new worker is always going to do their best work for you, whatever the weather. If they get a good amount of vacation days a year, as well as being paid over those days off, as well as being able to take sick days as often as necessary, they’re not going to feel trapped and insecure in their job. At the very least, you want to make sure an employee knows they can come to work and be looked after, rather than desperately worrying about the status of their job if a sickness or injury crops up in the way!

So scale their benefits, and try to pride yourself on the benefits package that you offer. Something like health insurance, which is ranked as the top appreciated employee benefit (for quite a few years running now) will always go down a treat. At the same time, if you can follow that up with pension plan, or guaranteed saving match plans towards retirement and other life milestones, your employees will definitely have the want to include you in their lives as much as possible.

Don’t Expect Too Much!

And finally, make sure you don’t expect too much from a brand new employee, especially if it’s only their first month on the job. After about 90 days you can review them to see how well they’ve settled in, and what they’re doing well, and how they’ve connected. But before this cut off point, try to limit your expectations.

For the time being, you want nothing but stability and reliability from your new employee. You want them to turn up on time, and you want them to come in for as many shifts as possible. Apart from that, anything else they achieve and accomplish during this period is an added bonus! And most of all, don’t heap a bunch of new responsibilities onto their plate, or throw them into a notoriously busy time of the year without any guidance or training on their side!

Are You Ready to Take on a New Employee?

It can be a messy time in a new businessperson’s life, and you want to get it just right! So, most of all, you want to be the person in their career they can look up to. You want to make sure they feel comfortable working for you, and that they’ll be willing to sign on for the proper contract at the end of the trial period. You want to invest in them.
