When work gets overwhelming and you continue to push yourself harder than you are capable of, you can be at risk of burnout. Burnout is essentially mental and physical exhaustion that is caused by prolonged periods of stress and can affect your work and daily life. Don’t let burnout beat you – there are plenty of ways in which you can alter your daily life in order to stay sane and avoid burnout when work gets overwhelming.

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

When you sleep, you are technically giving your brain and body time to recover from the mental and physical exhaustion that comes with daily life. Therefore, if you don’t allow yourself to get a good night’s sleep you can find yourself feeling sluggish, overly exhausted and often short-tempered. Combine this with an overload of hard and constant work and you’re almost guaranteed to have a burnout, as your brain simply won’t be able to function as well as it needs to. There are many ways in which you can ensure that you sleep well, such as investing in a memory foam mattress that adapts to the curves and shapes of your body, giving you maximum comfort.

Get Plenty of Exercise

If you’re completely swamped with work, you may find yourself doing nothing besides sitting at your desk all day long. While it may feel like you are being more productive and getting more work done, failing to provide other stimuli for your body and brain will decrease the quality of your work and increase your chances of burnout. Exercise is essential to keeping not only a happy body by helping to reduce fat and the risk of blood clots (if most of your day is spent sitting), but also a happy mind. By taking an exercise break, you will distract yourself from the source of stress and also encourage the release of endorphins, making sure that you get essential stress relief.

Keep Organized

A trap to fall into when you are completely overwhelmed with work and stress is losing your sense of organization. When you see a mountain of work piled up on your desk, it can be very easy to completely panic and start working as soon and as fast as you can without planning how to tackle it. If you start with the first piece of paperwork you see, you may be working on something that is not a priority, while papers that require immediate action sit at the bottom of the pile and are therefore left until last. Before you dig into work, make sure that you sort through the work to find what needs completing first and make an effective time management plan to limit stress and a last-minute rush.

Don’t Bottle it Up

One of the worst ways to deal with a great deal of stress is by bottling it up and feeling as though you can’t tell anyone about your struggles and worries. This is simply not true. If you feel that the stress is getting way too out of control, try talking to your manager. By doing this, not only will you be able to vent your frustrations and raise your points for concern, but you may also be able to negotiate with your boss to find a solution, whether that be to lower your targets or to give you some time off for mental recovery. If you don’t want to talk to your boss, talk to your friends and family – they will always be there to listen and to help. Crazy amounts of work are one of the key factors that cause unhappiness and stress in our daily lives, so make sure that you’re doing whatever you can to ensure it doesn’t get the best of you. Make these simple changes to your work pattern to stay sane and avoid burnout.
