Whether you have started a business from nothing, bought a franchise, or bought a business to run as your own, there are always ways that it can be improved and be more profitable. In fact, making a business more profitable is one of the main aims of all business owners and entrepreneurs; if the business is not making a profit, it won’t survive, and it won’t offer the owner the lifestyle they will have been looking for.
How to make a business more profitable is what needs to be worked on. Read on to find out some of the best ways this can be done, no matter what kind of business you are running or how you are doing it.
Increase Prices
Of course, one of the most obvious and perhaps easiest ways to increase profits is to increase your prices. An increase of around three percent should be enough to produce a good profit, and ensure that you are able to keep the business going and pay for anything that needs to be paid for.
Yet putting prices up needs to be done carefully. If you are a well-established business that people like to buy from and you suddenly put your prices up, there could be a backlash; you might accidentally drive your customers away to a competitor. If you are a new business that puts its prices up, there is even more chance of losing customers.
Therefore, make sure that when your prices go up, you start to offer something more to your customers. Your prices might increase, for example, but you start giving away a free cup of coffee with every purchase or offer a free eBook download. This won’t cost you an additional three percent, so you will still be making a profit, but it will feel as though your customers are getting value for money.
Reduce Expenditure
As well as increasing prices, another excellent way to make more money is to reduce expenditure. Look at what you are paying out for and there are sure to be places where you can reduce those costs. Utility bills are a good place to start as these are easy to compare online and you can switch instantly to a better deal.
You should also look at your production costs and your supplier costs. It might be that you can only buy your products from a certain place (although it is worth checking to see if this really is the case) and if so then your bargaining power will be limited, but that shouldn’t stop you from asking for a lower price. Negotiating is an important part of business, and the better you are the better deals you will get. Lower what you are spending and, in combination with putting your prices up, you will see higher profits.
Find Your USP
A business that has yet to find its USP (unique selling proposition) will find it hard to increase profits. Knowing your USP, the thing that makes you different from everyone else doing business in your field, is crucial. Once you know what it is, you can use that knowledge to inform your marketing, your pricing structure, your customer service, and everything else that goes alongside with running a successful business.
Focus on what makes you different and show it to the world. Customers will enjoy buying from a company that is unique, and they will be happier to spend their money with you.
Improve Customer Service
Customer service is one of the fundamental features of any business. It doesn’t matter what kind of product or service you sell, if you aren’t treating your customers in the right way you will lose them to your competition and lose sales and profits at the same time.
In order to improve your customer service you can speak to an expert about improving your UX design process, thereby improving the overall experience for your customers. This could involve making your checkout process more streamlined, or ensuring that your systems make it easier and simple for customers to buy from you (as opposed to anyone else).
Staff training is also vital. The better trained your staff are in customer service the better the experience will be for your customers, and the more likely it is that they will not only buy from you but buy more and recommend you to their friends.
Get More Leads
If your products and service are excellent and your prices are fair to both you and your customers, the only thing that could be preventing you from making a good profit is leads. If you aren’t getting any leads, you won’t be able to then convert those leads into sales.
How are you currently getting leads? Whatever you are doing, you will need to do more. That might mean upping your marketing budget and continuing to do what you have been doing in the past but on a larger scale. Alternatively, you could look at:
- Social media marketing
- Google AdWords
- Local advertising
- Radio advertising
- Customer rewards for word of mouth referrals
Improve Your Website
Even if you don’t sell online directly, it will pay to improve your website. Your website is a snapshot of your company, and if it is dull and poorly put together, you will be giving off a bad impression of your business as a whole.
Make sure your website is user-friendly and easy to navigate. You will need to include as much information as you can without it seeming to be cluttered, and this is most important if you have an online store – if customers can buy without having to get in touch with anyone to ask any questions, they are much more likely to do so.
Even if you don’t have an online store, people will come to your website to research you and find out what they can before making a decision to use you. Make sure your site is presented in a way that offers them all the details they need to know.
