Salvador Dali

Salvador Dali came to the area when he stayed at the Hotel Del Monte during World War II. The hotel is now part of the Naval Postgraduate School. Dali was one of the first members of the Carmel Art Association. It was Dali who threw one of the first themed parties in Pebble Beach. The party was to raise funds for artists who had been displaced in the war in 1941.

John Steinbeck

This well-known and much-loved author came from the Monterey Bay area. Steinbeck grew up in Salinas. Many of the novels he wrote were based on life in the area. His influence can still be felt there today. The historical street which was previously known as ‘Ocean View Avenue’ was renamed in 1958 to ‘Cannery Row’. This was done to honour the nickname Steinbeck gave to the area because at that tie it was a thriving fishing area with many canneries.

Jimi Hendrix

Anyone who listens to guitar music will know this name! Jimi Hendrix has often been called the most talented guitarist of all time. Before the start of his musical career Hendrix was stationed at Fort Ord military base. Hendrix in Monterey bay is most remembered for his wild performances, where at one show he smashed and burned his guitar on the stage. This was at the Monterey Pop Festival.

Joan Baez

This American folk and song writer loved to spend time at the Esalen Institute at Big Sur. Baez appeared at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 along with several notable musicians from Esalen where she led a workshop called ‘The New Folk Music’.

Doris Day

Although she was well-known for her acting and singing career, Doris Day’s true passion was for animal rights. After she left Hollywood, she settled in Carmel Valley. She is part owner of the Cypress Inn which is a popular pet friendly location in downtown Carmel.

Claes Oldenburg

This sculptor is best known for his enormous constructions of everyday real-life objects. Many people will be familiar with his ‘Hat in three stages of landing’ sculpture which was erected in Salinas by Oldenburg in 1982. Oldenburg also has sculptures in Barcelona, Paris and Chicago.

Steve Jobs

People will know him for his connection to Apple, which is one of the most profitable companies in the world. Jobs came from humble beginnings in Monterrey County. An interesting fact is that his prototype for the Macintosh computer was first displayed by Jobs at the team retreat in the hotel La Playa at Carmel-by-the-Sea.

Jack Kerouac

This famous author’s 1962 novel ‘Big Sur’ was based on several trips he made to the area with his friend and poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti who lived in a cabin in Bixby Canyon. The novel is a continuing inspiration to readers who seek solace and tranquillity in the Big Sur wilderness.

 Ansel Adams

This famous American photographer and environmentalist is best-known for his breath-taking black and white photography. Adams specialised in natural landscapes and lived in the Monterey Peninsula for more than 20 years. Here he spent his time capturing the beauty of the Big Sur coastline.
