How to Run a Safe Manufacturing Business

Ensure all equipment is properly serviced

To begin with, it is worth making sure that you are buying the equipment from a reputable seller in the first place. This is even more important when you consider buying second hand stuff as this has more of a potential of not being in great condition. Make sure to ask all the right questions to the seller. Beyond this, you should also have your equipment serviced as and when this is needed. Going to a firm is worthwhile in this regard as it means that you are putting this important task in the hands of the pros.

Make sure proper PPE is provided

All of your employees are going to need to have all the personal protective equipment that will defend their wellbeing in the workplace. Bear in mind that it is your responsibility as an employer to offer this to them. Beyond this, you also need to make sure that they are wearing it on the occasions that they need it. While accidents can sometimes occur anyway, the PPE is there to offer some important protection – and even has the potential to save lives as well.

Ensure proper training is offered

You do not want people to be using manufacturing equipment if they have not been trained to do so properly. Therefore, it is more than worthwhile ensuring that the training courses are provided right at the start of employment with your firm. At the same time, it should not then simply be assumed that this can be forgotten. It needs to be continually refreshed to ensure that it is as current as possible.

Keep analysing the risks

You should obviously have a full and proper risk assessment right at the start of taking out your facilities and getting them ready to be worked on. At the same time, you cannot then simply assume that there are no new risks that are going to spring up along the way. Instead, you need to keep on going back to analyse where and when the risks are coming from. Sometimes, they are highly specific – such as a Dust Hazard Analysis. It is also a good idea to have your staff members helping you out on this front. They may well be able to identify some risks that you were simply not able to see beforehand.

When you are running a manufacturing firm, there is no doubt that keeping it safe should be one of your number one priorities that cannot be overlooked for any reason at all. Ultimately, your safety should be put right at the heart of what you are doing as it then means that you are keeping your employee’s wellbeing right at the forefront of your mind.
